The white horse sign is a historic landmark that marks the former site of The White Horse pub, which was established in 1690. The pub was famous for being run by Mr and Mrs How, a couple who were both female at birth but lived as man and wife in the 18th century. According to some sources, Mary East and her unnamed female friend decided to live together as a married couple after being disappointed by men. They agreed that one of them should dress as a man and they chose by the toss up of a halfpenny. Mary became James How and married her partner outside Fleet Prison in 1732. Mr and Mrs How ran several taverns across East London before settling at the White Horse in 1745. They lived peacefully but faced blackmail from people who knew about James's past female identity. After Mrs How died in 1765, James was assaulted by a blackmailer and took the matter to court. James revealed his original identity and attended the trial as Mary East. He won the case and the blackmailer was punished . After the trial, Mary retired and lived as a woman until her death in 1780.
