The Garstang Museum is a real hidden gem in Liverpool. It's the departmental museum for ACE (archaeology, classics and Egyptology), and is open to the public on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The galleries are predominantly Egyptian and Nubian (ancient Sudan) artefacts, along with some Roman, Greek and Near Eastern objects. It's a great place to take the kids, and the museum often runs family events during the holidays. And if you have any questions about the collection, the staff are qualified academics, and are supported by student volunteers from the department. It doesn't have a cafe (it's in a departmental building), but there are shops and cafes nearby. The nearest parking is on-street a couple of minutes' walk away.
