I am currently 5 weeks away from finishing a 2 year Games Art course here. In that time, I have learnt nothing. Firstly, the centre is frankly unqualified to teach art. I learnt more in Year 10 Art & Design than I have on this supposed Level 3 course. I enrolled on the course because it was advertised as an arts course, and what we got is essentially watered down Games Design. There are no art lessons - occassionally, you will receive an assignment that amounts to a list of chores that will burn you out, but you will never learn art. I've never even seen a single one of our teachers actually draw - what little "art lessons" we've received have used either A) someone else's art ripped off Google, or B) primary school level demonstrations using shape tools on Google Slides. There are zero facilities dedicated to art; the only art materials we are provided on-site are Intuos graphic tablets that rarely work and a single box of cheap art supplies that looks to be from WHSmith. None of the teachers specialise in art either, except one who specialises in 3D modelling (every single student in my class specialises in 2D art). I feel insulted knowing that my work has been shown at open days and on college social media before, as - after 14 years of pracitising illustration - this college has only made me a worse, burnt-out artist. They have done virtually nothing to prepare me for my chosen industry. They are, additionally, terrible at dealing with mental health. They constantly repeat a rhetoric of "we're here if you need us, you can talk to us", only to discriminate against students with mental health issues or special needs. I recently had to report my Course Leader for harassing me over mental health issues that I have clarified to her several times, and I know people who have dropped out because their handling of autism is absolutely abysmal. They cannot claim to care so much about mental health when they make no effort to understand it; I don't know a single classmate who feels anything other than neglected by the "support" offered. Management is dreadful. I can only assume staff simply don't communicate, as we've frequently had impossible workloads with impossible deadlines piled on top of us, only for staff to get surprised when we're behind and burnt out. Every so often, we'll receive a survey so that they can get "student feedback", however I have not once felt listened to when I've voiced my complaints (this review itself is the result of two years of being exhausted and ignored). In fact, every so often, upon receiving a survey, our Course Leader will tell us to answer positively, or individually explain for each question exactly why she thinks the college is great, and I personally feel immensely pressured to stop having negative opinions - even though the college is completely unwilling to listen or improve. I regularly hear the excuse of "Covid-19 has made things harder", but I don't believe a symptom of Covid is making musicians teach an art course, creating assignments somehow even less thrilling than a 9-5 office job despite the students being very passionate artists, and then neglecting and ignoring them when they're struggling because they've basically been left without an actual education for 2 solid years. I am not remotely prepared for university (might help if they ever taught us about it, but we've never even been told how to apply for finance or accommodation). In short, if you're an artist, avoid the Games Art course here like the plague if you can. Myself and my classmates are extremely upset and frustrated at the subpar quality of this college, and staff seem to refuse to accept that. I am so tired of voicing my concerns and seeing zero signs of even an attempt to listen or change. This college feels like a toxic relationship, even in the sense that it's drained me of my biggest passions. Everything I have written lacks hyperbole or irony - it is just generally a dreadful college, and a massive insult to any form of visual arts as a profession. If you are not a Pianist, a Drummer, a Singer or a Guitarist, Don't bother with this college. The tutors and peers are lovely, I could't ask for better but as a brass musician there was no help on my side. I started at the college knowing I was the only brass musician at this college so I knew it would be a challenge. In my 3rd year I had to do a kind of interview thing as I missed the deadline as I was working, it was mentioned in my interview that there would be more solo work so I will be able to play my instrument. In our first rehearsal at college in year 3 we was asked to all perform Paparazzi by Lady Gaga and practice it in under a day to perform in front of the class the next day. Now, that is easy for a pianist, drummer, singer and a guitarist but very impossible for someone like me. For it to be possible I would have to find a music score online which there was none for my instrument, the closest I can get was a flute score and that is no where near my instrument. I would then have to completely change the score myself and then spend hours constantly learning it to see if it sound right, this would take a week or over but we was asked to do it in less then a day. They don't think about us musician who play different instruments. You would think they would pick a song that has access to ALL instruments, but no.
