Brought a tohatsu 6hp sail drive outboard less than a year ago. Used on a 2 week trip last summer and had the bolt come undone which released the starter recoil. Luckily i had my spare engine on board to take the parts off and fix at sea. Got the damaged parts sent out and i did the repair myself rewinding the starter coil . The idle became very erratic when servicing and narrowed down a bad fuel pump issue. Rung up today to get a replacement part 63 pound and told my warranty was void as it wasn't serviced by an authorised dealer. Don't see how any servicing affects a fuel pump. Ill be contacting trading standards and claiming back the costs for the repair. Julian hung up the phone. Its laughable that they trust you to rewind a starter coil probably the hardest job on the outboard but not qualified to change a fuel pump or service an outboard. Do not buy from this dealer and the 7 year warranty is void. No instruction manual in the box either to tell you this. Julian In response - there is no misunderstanding here. If you are not an authorised servicer of tohatsu engines and you do any work such as your engine breaks down at sea and you do an emergency repair like i did at sea with my life dependant on the engine the warranty is void. Thats utterly ridiculous and stupid. You also sent me a replacement part when the starter recoil issue occurred and it was very clear that i was doing the repair and you had no issues with me doing this which saved you lots of hassle and costs on postage of the engine and il chase this up with Tohatsu. You also never mentioned it would have voided the warranty as i did the repair so double standards how im ok do repair a starter recoil which is probably the hardest job on the engine but void the warranty doing a fuel pump literally 2 screws and 2 cir-clips. How can an engine fuel pump fail after a 2 week trip? Engine was purchased in July 22 didn't get delivered until August 22 and boat lifted out the water in september 22. The fuel pump isnt a serviceable part so hiding behind a Service wasnt performed at an authorised dealer is rubbish. Julian has failed to realises his own terms and conditions state: SSI marine offer products to be defect free for 12 months. I have made contact with trading standards and am in the process of getting an engineers report and will be recovering all the costs of this and a 63 pound part. Hope this gives you some in-site of how a 7 year tohatu warranty works as as well as how julian deals with issues. 2 issues in 2 weeks of use in less than a year of ownership. I offered to post the fuel pump out for inspection and even sent an image of a spare fuel pump i had installed which fixed the issue. Do you think i get a get a kick out of this? I spent over 1300 pound on an engine to deal with this. Also to save you searching the warranty t&cs of tohatsu.
