First, let me say some good things about this place: Lechlade is lovely and the hotel is in a great location. The staff were always friendly and helpful - I think it's a family business - and their communications beforehand were good. The price was pretty reasonable for anywhere that has 'on-Thames' in its name. So there were good vibes and I wanted to like it. But the courtyard room we had was decidedly disappointing. It was a small room with a really small double bed in it. It would have been comfy for one person - the mattress was fine - but I think it was the smallest double I've been offered in a hotel. When we arrived the room was cold and had a slightly strange smell. But the smell cleared, and for the rest of our stay the room was definitely overheated with no real way to control the temperature. (Our elderly friend in another room across the courtyard was exceedingly cold!) The loo seat didn't fit the pan and the light over the basin didn't work. The shower had rather variable temperature and very variable pressure: at times it was nice and then a moment later there was barely enough pressure for the water drops to reach your body. The shower head had to be propped up vertically because its attachment was broken. There were repeated regular flushing noises in the piping, which we joked were like sea breaking on a pebbly shore. I guess they may have been from the big washing machines a few doors down? And there was a certain amount of noise from people outside the room at night. All of which might have led me to award fewer stars, but as mentioned above, it did have several plus points as well, and it may have been that we were just unlucky with our room. A less generous visitor would have given one or two stars. A more generous one might have said that this was a family struggling to provide a good service given the challenges of an old building. I do appreciate that, but my score is based on the overall experience of the visitor, not the merits of the hard-working staff!
