Needed to carry out much painting & decorating to my property and knew it was likely to cost in the region of several thousand pounds. As most people would, I went ahead and sought three tradesmen to provide me with a price. The first, from Caton, arrived and said he'd give me a price for labour only. When I said I required total cost to include labour and materials, he snapped "oh, that takes time and you'll only be getting someone else to give you a price anyway"! What a strange response I thought! Next came Mr Cready. He walked round discussing the job, spending approximately an hour at my property, and then left saying he'd get a price in the post. Finally, a third decorator came out and did much the same. I then waited for all three costings to arrive. Result? First decorator from Caton sent me an estimate, but the following day he made contact again to suddenly increase the price considerably saying he'd forgotten to include the hall and landing! Rather strange I thought (yet again)! Next, the third decorator sent me a very professionally compiled estimate detailing a very clear schedule of works . Then I waited for the final estimate from Mr Cready to arrive. I waited and I waited ...but it didn't materialise. Thinking it might have gone astray in the post, I eventually phoned him to enquire about it. Response? .A rather rude "Erm, no it hasn't got lost. I just haven't bothered sending you one as I was chatting with my mate (the decorator from Caton) and he told me you'd asked him to look at the job and give you a price. I would have charged more than him so there was no chance of me getting the job so I didn't bother sending you a price. Bye!" Charming I thought. Guess that's the kind of behaviour and mentality that distinguishes the professional from the type of person I'd rather not have working in my home. As it happens, I'm now about to give the contract, worth several thousand pounds, to the decorator who treated me with some degree of respect. Even though his estimate is considerably costlier, he's the type of person I would rather do business with. As a female who's often the one alone at home whilst husband is at work, it's essential that I feel comfortable in the company of a trustworthy and reliable tradesperson. So glad I was exposed to these rather unsavoury interactions before giving the contract out!
