The Church of the Holy Innocents, built around 1140, is one of the only three Norman round tower churches and is Grade 1 listed. The tower was capped in the 19th century by a typical Essex spire. The church is normally open to visitors.

One of only 6 round towered churches in Essex, this one is continental in style with its rendered walls. It has an Essex style, witches hat of a steeple but the tower and nave date back to the 12th and 15th centuries. The dedication is unusual and refers to Herod's killing of all the babies under two in Jerusalem in his search for the baby Jesus. There is a text over the door in the brick vestibule from Ecclesiastes - Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. Inside the church has an Arts and Craft/ Pre Raphaelite feel to it with the wall behind the altar covered in glazed tiles and the figures in the early 20th century stained glass looking particularly in the style of Rosetti. Parts of the ceiling of the nave have fallen so visitors were not allowed past the rood screen when I visited.

Very pretty church and setting. Loved quirky bits of history, priests used to sleep in the roof of the porch.
