Richard is an inspirational musician and outstanding teacher. He taught our music-loving son for six years, taking him from beginner to advanced level. When we were looking for a teacher, we were told the most important thing was to find someone with whom our son could develop a positive relationship and who would keep the learning process enjoyable. In Richard we found the ideal teacher. As well as helping our son develop a sound classical technique, Richard taught him jazz theory and improvisation, and suggested a programme of listening which has enriched his musical appreciation and playing, both jazz and classical. At every step, Richard thoughtfully tailored his teaching specifically to our sons needs and responded to his interests; while our son was always progressing, he was also always fully engaged and thoroughly enjoying his lessons. Although our son moved to a new piano teacher when Richard left Edinburgh, he has recently re-started online lessons for jazz theory and music analysis with Richard, and is clearly benefitting again from his comprehensive knowledge, enthusiasm and excellent understanding of his pupils and their needs.
