If you like your castles to be intimate, hidden and mostly ruined, you'll love this little gem. Not a huge amount remains but there is one intriguing tower, some impressive earthworks, part of the gatehouse and a moat. Probably best to park in Kirkoswald and walk up the road (careful, no pavement). Whilst you're in Kirkoswald, there is also a church dating from the 12th century, a bell tower on top of the hill with good views, and a series of earthworks which possibly belonged to an earlier castle in the field behind the church.
