Constructed in the twelfth century this fortified house or "pele tower" near the River Eden ultimately served as a defensive buffer against plundering Scottish border raiders. It was abandoned in the seventeenth century and is now a National Heritage Scheduled Monument. Somewhat quaintly it is known locally as "Castle Dolorous" where allegedly an unhinged giant resided during the Arthurian epoch, no doubt adding to its sense of barren and ancient mystique! Nowadays its remnants are a shelter for grazing sheep and squawking bickering crows. Lovely views of distant hills set in a wild and natural landscape.
