Wow this place is a truly hidden gem, with an absolutely impressive kitchen! I've been literally blown away today by the purely amazing chef craftsmanship of creating tasty dishes. We found the spot quite easily, it's round the back from Coxhoe High Street past some old container storage units. Parking on the High Street was easy at 10am on a Wednesday. You get 3 hours stay free of charge. The entrance to the caf was a double glazed door (unimpressed at first) but then, wow! Met with quirky decor and a low-light entrance hall with space to hang your coat. Continue in through the Narnia Wardrobe doors and you enter into the reception area that has a living wall - real greenery all done by hand by the owners, it is stunning! I already liked the vibe of the place. We were met at the 400 year old wooden entrance doors to the caf (they looked like they were from a castle!) and seated at a table of our liking. The wood burning stove was on creating a glowing warmth throughout the space. The lighting was a dusky warm set of LED hanging lights which gave it an ambience I've not experienced in a caf before. We were invited round the venue showing us what the space had, saying hi to the Chef on route past the kitchen who later was found freshly preparing the fish for Sushi on the menu. We saw the activity space, the outdoor area (looking forward to that in summer!) and a low seated lounge of the kind of Yoga or Japanese-esque feel. We ordered our coffees, both choosing cappuccino, which were served with sugar cubes and a teaspoon each. The coffee blend was fairly mild which suited us. No overriding dark roast that sometimes leaves a bitter taste in your mouth which I hate before food. I ordered the Tofu Ramen dish and my Mrs had the winter salad. Both dishes were VERY well presented, and tasted absolutely brilliant. The salad was the perfext mix for Kelly and my Ramen were the thin rice noodles in a spicy tomato soup - plenty of tofu and the egg was soft and still runny; perfectly boiled. The taste of the dish literally took me away, dreaming of being in an oriental restaurant helped by the sonos soundsystem playing a beautiful mix of Eastern music. I felt like I was on holiday for a few moments, and I've never even been to Asia before! The chef deserves some recognition on the menu, he's created a good range to choose from and tells me he plans on changing monthly what is on offer - so I guess I'll have to come back soon! What struck me was the fact we were just off from the main street in Coxhoe but it felt we were thousands of miles away in another country; full of mystery and culture. I recommend you visit the place. Give it a try because you will not be let down. Knowing they have a selection of spaces to relax in means it's always going to be interesting. That coupled with friendly staff/owners, what is not to like?! Oh, and there's a martial arts dojo right next door. Maybe I need to come through and learn some moves too.
