In an emergency, he is calm, skilful and compassionate. He does not oppress owners with suggestions that they should do major work such as MRIs of minor sprains; pointless blood tests etc - neither does he oppress animals by suggesting horses should go on long periods of box rest when this is clearly going to leave them mentally unfit and confer no clear-cut physical benefit.
He rarely expresses a didactic opinion but when asked, he will give clear guidance in difficult decisions. This is exactly what people need from a vet. He treats a sick elderly mongrel as kindly and meticulously as he does a smart dressage horse or Grade A.
