Huawei P40 Review. Everyone knows by now, that the Huawei P40 is the first of the new range of phones not to have Google services. We are all told that there are workarounds to this problem, such as using online Google maps instead of the app, same goes for several things including eBay. I decided that, having already had two of their previous phones and a smartwatch from them, that I was going to take this leap of faith and stay with the company, which of course meant upgrading to the Googleless P40 pro. The Phone clone app does quite a good job of moving apps from your old phone, (in my case a Huawei P20), but not all will run. There are several other app stores available as well as the Huawei one, one of which, Aptoide, has most of the apps you can find on Google play Store, but if it is one from the list of google only apps, they simply dont run. These apps, such as Google pay, just refuse to run at all, (Huawei wallet does not replace this app so it is back to getting the debit card out again for contactless payments). Other apps just run strangely, Waze is an example of this, it loads and it has everything you need but a map! Just a blank screen with all the options but no actual map. However, I have to say that I was not disappointed with the phone, I had already anticipated the google problems and so was not surprised when some of my favourite apps simply refused to work. But what really shocked me, was when my smartwatch, (my HUAWEI smartwatch), refused to connect, stating that it needed an unobtainable Google app called Wear OS! What made the whole experience worse, is the lack of support from Huawei on the subject. When I contacted them, they offered me all the obvious things, try Huawei Health, reset the phone, reset the watch etc. (none of which worked). I was then told that they would check with their technical team and get back to me, weeks went by and I have not heard anything since? Surely they were not going to leave me hanging with my Huawei Watch II which cannot connect to my Huawei phone? So I contacted them again, I received the exact same email asking if I had tried connecting to the Huawei health app, (clearly an auto response to this problem), I replied that I had, and was again left hanging. I then contacted their CEO, I received a reply within several minutes! It was the, have I tried to connect through the Huawei Health app circular again! Nothing since. So, my 250+ smartwatch has been rendered useless. I reiterate that this is a Huawei smartwatch that does not connect to a Huawei phone. In fact, a 250 Huawei smartwatch that cannot connect to my 800 Huawei phone. There are numerous videos on YouTube stating that there are ways to 'sideload' google onto these phones, in my experience, not of them have worked. I was a very loyal Huawei user, I have had an Honor 8, a P20 and now a P40 Pro, (as well as my watch). My wife has had an Honor 9 and now has a P30 Pro, my daughter also has a P30 pro, (on my recommendation), but, effectively, for all this loyalty, I have now been left with a 250 paperweight! I sent this review to Huawei asking for their comments and to see if I can give it a happy ending but, alas no such luck!
