The people on the website, had irritated me by asking that I produce the last six digits of my SIM card serial number before they could deal with me. Of course, I did not have it. My phone was lost.
Then they wanted the exact date of my last top-up and the amount. I knew it was between 20th and 24th April and that I had loaded 40, in China. They were still unmoved. So I was asked for the number I last called. I said it was to my wife but she has two numbers, so I gave both.
The guy said it had to be one. And the date too had to be one. So I proceeded to state all the places I had been to with the phone recently, knowing they could track the SIM movements. They guy would still not budge. After an hour of haggling, I told the guy to get off the website and connect me to his global CEO.
After a few minutes, some senior guy showed up. He begged to read the chat. Then apologised and asked me to head to their Hounslow office to get it resolved. That is where this woman comes in.
The customer service people at the Hounslow office were immaculate. Deeply apologetic and very helpful - they were from India and Romania. Given I know a thing or two about Goa, Bangalore and Mumbai, we got into quite some light-hearted banter. All these very friendly people joined in, mesmerised by my describing their home cities in detail. While we asked the Romanians to invite us to Romania. Their names were Gabriela, Tasmine, Shania and Tony. Pure angels from heaven that absolutely made my day.
Suddenly, I asked the African sister who was helped by another advisor Tasmine: "Are you from South Africa?" She asked how I knew, so I regaled her with stories about South Africa and asked which language she spoke. She replied that it was Tswana, and I said: "Ga ke tslaloganye Setswana, Dumerr Ma!" (spelling?) The woman was delighted beyond measure. I have never met this lady before today.
And we got into a Pan Africanist discussion, touring Africa together. We held the space captive as everyone just watched us. People in the store asked whether we were sure we had never met? The woman replied: "That is the way we do it in Africa."
A very simple encounter but a special moment for me. When we come together as Africans, we are powerful.
