Yoga is good for you, for your mind as well as for your body, I get that now and wholeheartedly agree. I have been doing a (mostly) once a week class with Shannon and Tim for a maybe 2-3 years now and it has been really fundamental to looking after myself in many ways - whilst I learned how to run, to strengthening my core to support my dodgy lower back, and overall to make me feel stronger, more flexible and stretched (that really is a feeling I did not know about until I experienced it!). I have learned how to breathe properly, and how to really notice and concentrate on that breath entering and leaving my body, and how that gives us amazing space in our mind to be present and just for a while not be thinking about the problems of the world, the long to do list, or the things we are worrying about or planning out all the time in our thoughts. A yoga session in the morning sets me up for the day, and a yoga session in the evening helps settle me to get a proper rest at night - win win, and Yogatonic has so many sessions available I am able to catch morning, evening, or even a gap randomly in the middle of the day where I can squeeze in one of their 30mins practices if I do not have an hour. There are so many videos now that I can choose an area to focus on, and how challenging to make it as well as selecting the time I have available.
They have a lovely studio at home, but it is their decking at the back of their house, with the long views over Cookham countryside towards the River Thames that make this the most perfect and idyllic place to practice yoga. So even when we moved on to zoom classes I was still pleased to see that view! Their technology works really well, and they are really good at making you feel at home with a friendly hello and check in at the end of the session, much more personalised than online yoga could be. They do not require you to leave your camera on but if you do they may notice and suggest adjustments without it being a personal thing, and certainly without judgement. In fact that is something I praise them for most - in person or on zoom - they are so inclusive, there is absolutely no judgement, no competition and no "showy-off ness about their approach at all despite them both being absolute masters of their work and incredibly fit. I dont feel worried that the classes are not for me, there is everyone there, fit and less fit, young and not so young, men, women, senior business people and stay at home mums. There is always several options to each pose to challenge yourself as much as your experience, your body and sometimes just how you are feeling that day!
Another thing that is fabulous is that this is a family business. Classes with Tim and with Shannon are quite different, and I like different things about each of their styles, but I also love to occasionally see their son Max and their dog Missy in on the action. Yoga is something my family have come together on too. It is not something I thought I could persuade my husband to try, and now he loves it. My teenage daughter also attended classes weekly as her physical skill to learn for her Duke of Edinburgh award, but continued with her practice as a real benefit for space in her mind as well as physical exercise for a teenager with a lot of stress with school, and just an escape to growing up generally! It was a fabulous bonding for father and daughter to attend class together, and a fabulous way for us all to do something together when we were shifting furniture aside for all four of us to do it on zoom in our lounge in lockdown!
