The most knowledgeable and reliable double bass luthier i have ever seen or known. A lot of greats trust Lawrence, and i bet that says a lot about the quality of the service. Even a newbie player like me got the best treatments and advice for my bass that i could ever have. Ill never take my bass anywhere else! Mar 30th, 2023

This is the best place in the UK to take your double bass! Laurence is an absolute gent and a total master repairer. Hes repaired and worked on my instruments for many years and I cannot recommend his services highly enough. Prices are always fair and unlike other repairers, he spends time to find out exactly what the problem is before offering advice and solutions. If you take your bass here youre in safe hands! I have had extensive work done on two double basses here. I cannot recommend the Bass Place enough. Laurence is without a doubt the best luthier I know in the UK. I can tell he is passionate about his work. His expertise and knowledge regarding setting up basses is really quite incredible. He has an honest no nonsense approach, he is kind and understanding and will schedule you in even when he is busy (like this time round when the shop has been receiving a lot of requests around this busy run up to Christmas period). I have recently had work done on my second bass which is a tall bass made out of old wood. This bass had potential to be good, hence why i bought it, but it was a complete mess with a botchy set up-grim. I bought it in a horrendous condition with a mis aligned end pin, cheap tuning pegs, a cheap flimsy wooden tail piece, an overly large wonky bridge which was about to damage the bass, then a sound post which was going to fall and then the absurdly high action with high tension steel strings which were messing up my fingers. All of this Laurence sorted for me at a reasonable price. I will always be thankful. He strung the bass with some guts I bought in and in tying more gut on, made sure that the D string was long enough to reach the tuning pegs (this bass has an enormous headstock). I gigged soon after I got the bass back, playing the music of Charles Mingus. The Bass projects so well, plays well, has a deep Oscar Pettiford like tone and yea Im just so happy with this bass. Thanks again Bass Place. Will be back again at some point if I need some work done on my other bass. Dec 28th, 2022
