I stayed in Downe Cottages whilst working in the Hartland Peninsula for over a month from June to July 2019. Its incredibly peaceful, nestled into the countryside between Hartland and a few mins walk of the spectacular coastal path. The Cottages are all very comfortable and range in levels of luxurious ness. I lived in Hydrangea for 5 weeks, for work, and brought my family on weekends. It was excellent and around the Cottages sprout wild flowers, illuminous California poppies and a range of flora and fauna. The owners and managers Jeremy & Linda are extremely kind and thoughtful people and were incredibly supportive and accommodating for myself and my colleagues during our stay. We had attrocious weather at the end of May, early June 2019 but even with grey skies and sheet rain the landscape was very compelling. Then summer kicked in and as you can see from these photos its as beautiful as anywhere Ive ever been. For swimming I recommend Hartland Quay or Berry Beach ( although youll need flip flops as there isnt much sand at Berry.) For food go to the excellent Hart Inn, run by the local wit and equally kind hearted farmer Brian Olde. Excellent Beer and terrific steak. For a quick drink and sunset the Hartland Quay has spectacular views but the food is a little limited. If you plan on staying a while pick up shopping en route to Devon or drive to the co op in kilkehampton. Alternatively in the village Hartland there is the Pop In shop but this closes after around 6pm so after a long drive on a Friday if you re in Devon for the weekend come armed supplies.
