I decided to learn to play the kamanche which is a middle Eastern spiked fiddle (the Iranian kind) and looked online for teachers, I found Faraz Eshghi at Sornai music school and wrote a message on their website and Arzu who manages classes got back to me. Faraz is classically trained in violin/viola but also traditionally trained in Iranian instruments including kamanche and that combination is perfect for me. Faraz asked me why I wanted to learn this instrument and when he saw I was genuinely interested he helped me to find a rental instrument and later even helped have one made for me in Iran which turned out to be a beautiful sounding instrument! He has a good way of encouraging you to practice but doesn't get too frustrated when you don't (at least not in a bad way as he understands my work commitments etc). He encourages you to send him videos of you practicing and he finds ways to inspire you by sending videos of performances he thinks you will like. He got me playing simple tunes within a couple of lessons which apparently is impressive. He will teach musical notation but he also allowed me to progress with minimal musical theory as that's what I wanted. He does however insist on certain practices that help with fundamental development like open string bowing. I decided to take a relatively intensive first 4 months of weekly lessons which helps a lot. They have a good location near North Ealing train station and importantly for me, with easy parking nearby, the on site parking is full half the time at weekends when I get there but local resident parking is free and 5 minute walk. The other teachers and staff are all really nice too. I always enjoy relaxing in the waiting area listening to all the different instruments!

I have been working with Sornai school for quite some time now. They have a lovely and friendly environment. The staff are very friendly and professional and the amount of progress that students are making is surprising. Highly recommended for those who want to pick an Iranian or classical instrument.
