Excellent lunch, good ambience, and fairly priced. The main attraction is some unusual twists to the menu - which makes a pleasant change from "the average pub". We had the venison and venison burger mains and I had the excellent kedgeree from the brunch menu as a starter. Wife's starter (the pear & cheese tart) was disappointingly small, but that is the only point of criticism.

My husband and I visited The Ram on Tuesday 25th April. We'd been out for the day celebrating my birthday. We were shown to our table and promptly attended to. Unfortunately, we were then told of a number of menu options that weren't available which wasn't the start we wanted. I do understand that you run-out of things..... but cashew nuts! Anyway, we put that behind us and ordered the Chateaubriand (which we wanted cooked medium-well) and four sides. We were told that it would be 40 minutes. We quite contentedly sat chatting away sipping a pleasant Chilean Merlot and, having easily consumed the small dish of salted peanuts, we decided to have another dish as only 15-odd minutes had passed. My husband had just returned from the bar with the nuts when a waitress then appeared with our Chateaubriand and sides! It then clicked that this would be an alternative version of Chateaubriand.....duly confirmed by the duty supervisor (after we asked how the Chef managed to cook the meat so quickly) who told us that the meat was pre-cooked and then sliced and pan-fried to order. If we'd have known this, we wouldn't have ordered the dish. If we'd have known that the Chef couldn't prepare Jersey Royals, we wouldn't have ordered them either (served unscraped and so under-cooked that we couldn't get a fork in them!!). The meat, albeit flavoursome, was served "well-done" due to every slice being overly seared in the pan. When we raised these issues with the duty-supervisor, she reacted as if she'd heard it all before (which I'm sure she has working with that Chef) and wasn't remotely flustered by anything we said whilst delivering an apology of sorts. She did then make a token deduction from our bill but we left with a sour taste in our mouths and my husband muttering " I knew we should have had the burgers! ".
