How to make this brief.......Ha - impossible. My Mum's wake was last week. The day was ok, the BGC service and attitudes were less so. A man called 'George' apparently deals with events@ emails. And ignores most, failing to reply to a single one I sent, either before of after the wake. Staff consistently found this amusing ('oh, George, he's useless'). So, on the day......when we arrived, I was told the ramp to cover the steps into the clubhouse was broken, so we had to carry Dad into his wife's wake. He only got a little paint on his hands from the wet door (the 'caution' tape was scrunched under the open door). When I booked, I was assured there would be 'plenty' of vegetarian options on the buffet. The food was alright, but seemed to have been beamed in direct from 1993. 'Plenty' of veggie options even back then, never mind 2023, isn't cheese & pickle and egg sandwiches. Oh, and salad leaves. As the family left, a woman behind the bar loudly tutted and commented 'oh, look at all that wasted food'. As. the. family. left. The enigmatic 'George', incapable of replying to emails in the weeks prior, took less than an hour to reply to one that afternoon, and attach an invoice. Hilariously and the moment that nudged this from a 2- to a 3-star review is the nerve and relentless positivity of the guy I ended up dealing with in person today, when 'George' failed to materialise (or was this 'George'?!): After trying to explain that despite 'George' being in charge of the events@ emails, he isn't the events manager, and he can't tell me why the events manager doesn't look after the events@ emails; after agreeing that it really isn't funny that a staff member refuses to interact with customers, especially when they're customers because of bereavement; after nodding and hmming as I described the issues, telling me that yes the food should have been better, and yes of course he'll speak to the staff; after explaining that they'll have a ramp built by the end of the summer (not sure how that helps with us, or regulations in general)......he looked at me, asked if I'd 'otherwise' had a good day, and then asked if I'd be back, and would I recommend the BGC as a venue.... With a straight face. Even Dad laughed when I told him.
