I am amazed that the smallest North Essex villages can have some of the largest Churches. There is no doubt that the hammer beam roof at St George's Great Bromley is the jewel in this gem of a church. The box pews give an ordered feel to the nave, but lookout for the carving in the south aisle. Cautionary tales for when a dragon is around!

By giving St George's two stars you may think that I didn't like it. You'd be wrong. I loved it but, if you're eating churches on a five star system, St George's is a two star. Only about a 1,000 churches in England warrant any stars at all. St George's is very welcoming. It is a joy to visit.

St. George's is a traditional style rural Essex church, sited at the centre of Great Bromley. It's setback from the main road behind the scenic seclusion of some mature deciduous trees. Across the lane on the fork in the road leading to Little Bromley, is a separate cemetery area. St. George's is a beautiful, impressively large building, made of stone & flint with a short tower. It's architecture is very well proportioned with ornate tracery windows & a wealth of stained glass inside. The interior is light & spacious with some very interestingly unique curiosities. There's reference to St. George by sculpture featuring the mythical dragon. However, by far the most unique feature that I've never seen in any other church, is a dusty collection of bowler hats! They all once belonged to former bellringers at St. George's!
