I used to fly out of here many many years ago. Back in those days the main aircraft were chipmunks, bulldogs, pipers and cessnas with the latter 2 being civilian and the former being the university air squadrons. The interesting aspect of this airfield is in its history. The base was a little late to the war, coming in just after the Liverpool Blitz, but stationed there at that time, it housed both Spitfires and Meteors. The last operational spitfire at Woodvale was there till 1958 ! I really like that RAF Woodvale places Gate Guardians on the main gate with the current one being a Hawk which is one of my favourite light jets and also the aircraft currently favoured by the Red Arrows. Before the Hawk was the Phantom II (F-4) which is another good looking heavy jet fighter albeit strange in that for a fighter it was never initially fitted with guns - just missiles and bombs. If I have one complaint though - once one of these fantastic aircraft are relegated to guardian duties, the tender loving care the both earned and deserve it omitted and slowly you see them rot away on the gate.... The RAF could easily pay someone to clean and polish these machines once a week like they did during their earlier duties. As always, if you found this review useful please remember to like it. If people like the review (whether you agree or not), it encourages me to write more ;)
