Last year this amazing artwork by Mark Wallinger was updated: the numbering of all stones was outlined with new paint and covered with a special transparent waterproof compound. 19,240 individually numbered stones stand for the exact number of British soldiers killed on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The work is inspired by the one million soldiers who left from Folkestone harbour to fight on the battlefields of France and Flanders. While the restorers were working, lying on the stones under the awning, the residents of Folkestone often stopped and made a remark to the guys lying on the stones that this is a monument and should not lie here...
