I came here hoping for respite after having arrived in North Devon a year earlier and having become very unwell there. Not least because I had my care budget cut by a third, though my care needs had increased and because my condition was not understood by the assessor.
Many people in my position feel under attack as benefits as care budgets come under threat. These reductions are administered by the very people we used to think we could depend upon to support us. Under qualified "Care Managers" are who now come to assess our care needs. This used to be Social Workers. Many decent and competent social workers have left the service now because they felt unable to sustain being pen pushers that were only employed simply as people qualified to to reduce budgets. Those left to soldier on often feeling under siege themselves and powerless where once they could make a difference.
The irony of all of this, is that it makes people like me more unwell because of the increased stress and increases mental the health problems that happen as you struggle with chronic, degenerative illnesses. I had one visit after three months from a care manager who was re assessing my care package. I have not been able to contact her and neither has a mental health duty worker from Bideford who continues to try and support me though the 12 week period of "transition" that is well and truly up.
I am at my wits end... You have a duty of care Exeter! The new care act expects more not less of you. I have not talked to anybody in the service that does not complain to me about budgets before speaking of my needs . That includes GP's and consultants in hospitals. Are we supposed to say,"..'ok never mind my medication then.."? or to pretend that we no longer need care? We are made to feel that we are unreasonable to talk of our day to day bottom line needs.
I am in the fifth month here with no help or support in sight. my question is. I am articulate, educated, aware of my rights to care and aware of my care needs. But if I have become too unwell to keep fighting, what of others who are not, educated, articulate or aware of their care needs?
Shame on you Exeter...
