My E46 320i had broken down on the M180 and my recovery would only take me up to 10 miles. Given I needed to travel another 30 miles to get to home, I noticed M Tech Auto Services were nearby so I arranged for them to expect my car in for a repair.
Left the car with Kev and he informed me that itll be a few days till he can get around to it which was fine with me. 2 days later, Kev calls and tells me that the car need a fuel control module, which is going to cost me 380 if I pay in cash. Given that this conversation was brief and over the phone, I explained that I just need the car running so get it donehe then adds that within the total cost is 15 of fuel which he had to put in. This confused me as the car had 80 miles range left in the tank when it stopped. Nonetheless, my mistake was that I decided to leave it with him and query it once I collect the vehicle.
The next day was a Saturday, and I went to collect the vehicle and queried the work hed done. I explained that I didnt think the E46 320i has a separate control module for the fuel pump. He told me oh its behind the glove box.
This exchange felt uncomfortable but I needed the car so I paid him whilst suspecting Ive been taken for a mug. The following Monday I went to check with a BMW specialist if my suspicions were correct, the BMW specialist explained that the fuel gauge sensor on E46s can be unreliable so the car may have run out of fuel on the M180. The specialist also clarified that behind the glove box, the only part which relates to the fuel system is a relay. The specialist explained that the relay wouldnt cost much to replace as the horn also uses the same type of relay.
I went back to confront Kev about this and asked him to come clean or prove what works justified the 380. Initially he flat out refused to accept hed lied, then his story started to falter and he admitted that behind the glove box there are only relays BUT he insisted on calling them relay control modules to justify his wording to me. At this point, he started to claim that he had done more work than hed initially told me, supposedly hed cleaned debris from my fuel tank.
Insisting that hes a reputable mechanic, he assured me that hed prove me wrong and said email me the invoice for the very expensive part he installed.
Its been over two weeks and Ive heard zilch from Kevin - The Blinker Fluid Specialist. Mind you Im not surprised, I imagine proving youve not ripped someone off, whilst you yourself know that you have, is probably quite tricky.
Id not be annoyed if he came clean when I confronted him, as I value honesty and accountability, but the man is a lying deceitful crook!
Do yourself a favour and do not trust this man with your car.
