I sent them over my old unit, and when the new engine arrived I had it fitted by a trusted garage. We followed their instructions to the letter, both when fitting and when driving.
After only 700 miles the engine suffered a catastrophic break down - beyond roadside repair and leaving me stranded.
The VW Engine Company agreed to inspect the engine, and I had the whole van recovered to them. After inspection, they claimed that the damage could not possibly be their fault, and thus the warranty would not be honoured.
They claim the engine lost oil, causing significant damage. I do not believe they have offered me a satisfactory reason for why this happened. They have certainly not offered to help - their only suggestion was for me to pay 4000 for them to fit a new unit.
Sadly, I have been forced to sell my beloved van of many years. I just can not afford to pay out for another new engine, and I can not run the risk of them supplying another suspect unit.
Buyer beware - a new engine should last more than 700 miles, and some effort should be made to partially or fully honour their warranty.
