The Estates footprint settled on former light industry precinct devastated by the Luftwaffe in WWII. Opened in 1957 and completed in 1962. Largely intact comprising a configuration of mostly dissimilar residential buildings over levels and incorporating tennis courts, a swimming pool, sunken garden and a community centre. Great Arthur House, the core visible landmark, acknowledged as THE precursor of High-rise London. Postwar modernity envisioned as a credible and cohesive urban environment. 60 years on and the verdicts still out.
