This is also only the second time in my lifetime, that I've left a negative review anywhere.
In this day & age, it's very common to only carry a bank card, not cash. I work in an independent food shop myself and sometimes people only spend 50p on card (it's certainly not ideal but customers are important and you want them to come back)!
I went in without a list (unusual for me) and just wanted 2 ingredients for a specific recipe as food waste is important to me, so no point buying loads that will not get used up in time (not that this should be relevant as I should be able to buy what I need). I got an eye roll from the older lady who served me behind the counter (which I don't think she realised I'd noticed) and told very sternly that I couldn't pay for that amount by card (just shy of 1)...I was more than happy to pick up a few extra items to increase the total (which ironically sadly did end up going bad after 2 days) and politely explained I'd not shopped here before and had come in a little unprepared (can't withdraw cash on a credit card either), happens to us all! Then got an abrupt unfriendly finger pointed at the sign saying "do not pass food through the gap" (I'm fairly certain it was a normal human instinct to hand her my produce through there instead of awkwardly round the side of the till and again was my first time here)! I apologised. No smile from her, overall rude - I still persisted to lighten the atmosphere by making a joke at my expense, however customer service shouldn't work this way round... I would never ever dream of interacting with my customers in this way, and if they made a small purchase I'd politely ask if they possibly had another form of payment or did they need anything else; and if I owned a shop I certainly would not want to put people off as my livelihood would depend on them.
All in all, sadly I don't feel encouraged to return because of that unpleasant experience and will shop elsewhere.
I assume/hope not all the staff there are like this, but she detered me enough unfortunately and seemed as though she may have been the owner (even more troubling). And that's a real crying shame because she would have had a loyal customer who would have regularly spent much more hard-earned money (which is in short supply for a lot of us in the world right now), and someone who is extremely passionate about supporting independent businesses :-(
