Culmington Church

All Saints Church in Culmington is one of the oldest and most distinctive churches in Shropshire. The parish was first mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1087, but the Saxon herringbone stonework in the north and south walls indicate the presence of a stone church on this site before that year. The base of the tower is 13th century. The top section, an unfinished broach spire added in the 14th century, is a lighter stone. In the 18th century, records show the spire was covered in oak shingle but these blew off in a storm. The timbers were then encased in lead but by 1969 this had degraded and water was beginning to ruin the whole structure. The current spire is made of aluminium and was lowered into place by helicopter. The interior of the church is a real hodge podge of original items, restorations, curiosities and redundant items. Sections of whitewash on the walls have been removed to expose medieval wall paintings. The rood screen was originally gilded but removal of the many layers of whitewash took all colour with it. The large iron brace across the nave was added in 1796 after a scare the walls were about to collapse but it has been discovered that it is bears no load. The small square window just behind the screen is a small square window, complete with wooden shutter and medieval iron bars. The purpose of this window is unknown, it is in the wrong position to be a leper squint and too low for much else.
