Lovely surroundings, despite being early spring. Happy with our room and appreciate the artworks and design. Staff were pleasant, generally quietly spoken and slightly reserved. What's disappointing about our experience, is how the menu is designed: Most of the meals are included in your package weekend. Some are not and you can be caught out if you're not paying attention. Some meals are served as a "meat only" dish and your sides, like chips, salad or veg are charged at 4 per side. Alcohol and soft drinks are ridiculously expensive. Included breakfast is a choice of porridge or mushrooms or avocado on toast with 2 poached eggs. There are a couple of other options that I cannot remember. A full English breakfast is an extra 6.50. My view is, get rid of the "stealth" pricing and put together a package that is transparent to guests. Also, consider your mark up on drinks.

We stayed for 2 nights in the main house and had read the reviews prior to going and so we were aware of the eye watering prices and the corkage fee. Staying there is like staying at an Airbnb house. There are no signs for reception or the bar or room numbers, its MPWs house. Our room was lovely and quirky and the food we had was excellent. However, the overall impression is that you are not really wanted there outside meal times. When speaking to the girl on reception she seemed rather disinterested with you being there. The eye watering prices for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks makes sitting in the lounges and relaxing cost prohibitive after a couple of drinks as we also wanted wine with our meal; you also cannot bring your own unless you pay a 40 corkage fee. We enjoy reading but the lighting throughout is low level 1930s orange, so by 3.30pm / 4pm when the natural light fades reading became increasingly difficult which meant returning to your room. Whilst the room is lovely, there are no facilities to make a tea or coffee and we didnt want to just sit in our rooms. After a long walk we spent Sunday afternoon at the Quarrymans pub, a 20min walk down the road, and which we saw a number of other Rudloe residents. An excellent pub, very friendly, reasonable prices and the food we had for lunch was amazing, highly recommend a visit. During our stay at the Rudloe the menu had two main mac n cheese dishes, which was not what we expected at MPW, who likes mac n cheese that much! On the whole our view is that its overpriced for the level of service and the facilities that are on offer and which you can use. There are many quirky inns and hotels that we have stayed at that offer better facilities, who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, want you to stay at their venue, food and drink that is just as good and at a fraction of the price. As we have read in other reviews, MPW is relying on his name and we agree and in this super competitive industry thats not enough these days. Would we stay there again no, and if a friend asked if they should go we would not recommend it as there are better hotels to stay at and who are genuinely appreciative of it.
