Went back here post covid on a nostalgia trip found it even better than before, wonderful home cooked food in traditional surroundings, highly recommended. Just remember, cash only!

The waitress was lovely and the service was excellent, the food was generally homemade and good quality. The problem was with dessert; I ordered the apple pie and the waitress asked if I'd like it hot or cold. I ordered 'hot apple pie' with cream. When it arrived the pastry looked very white rather than golden brown. I tasted it and found the pastry to be soggy like putty. It also tasted like raw flour so I sent it back. The landlord put th apple pie on my bill so I explained that I had sent it back and felt I shouldn't be charged for it. The landlord became angry and said 'nobody else had complained about his apple pie'. He then marched into the kitchen and came back with the whole pie and barked 'what's wrong with that' at me. I asked if my slice of apple pie had been reheated in the microwave and he snapped ' Of course, how else do you expect it to be warmed up'. This altercation ruined the dining experience so I would not recommend this pub for food purely based on the nasty attitude of the landlord. In the restaurant business and any chef will say that when pastry is microwaved to reheat it, it's ruined. I would of expected the kitchen staff at the Lower Royal George to know that fact. Perhaps they could invest in a 'Pie Warmer' to avoid a reoccurrence of such an easy to resolve mistake. The landlord could also improve his attitude to customer service and check out consumer rights.
