Great museum, especially if you have children - there's plenty for them to interact with and replica helmets and garb for them to try on. There's a extra hour-long tour to see the Roman vaults below and head up to the castle roof afterwards. Bear in mind these aren't accessibility friendly (the museum itself very much is - 2 lifts and plenty of seating throughout). There's 20 rough stairs down to the vaults and several very low arches between the vaults, so mind your head. Really interesting, our tour guide Alan was great, obviously loves what he does and it shows. If you're a history nerd like me, I'd definitely recommend it. The walk up to the roof is back up the 20 steps out of the vaults and then another 50 steps up a surprisingly wide spiral staircase. There's a pause in between to catch your breath but it's definitely a work out if like me you're usually more sedentary. The view over Colchester from the roof is well worth it, especially if you're lucky with the weather. It would have been nice if the tour included the chapel too, but we certainly got our hour's worth. The only other thing is if you find noise overwhelming, be aware the museum will be tricky. I'm autistic and found it a bit overwhelming, between the overlapping audio exhibits and the understandable ruckus of multiple school parties working their way through. Definitely a day to remember your earplugs!
