My short experience at The Haven, found it to be well meaning, but somewhat disorganized. Sadly, the client's focus is by necessity, on finding the funds to remain open. The Haven must have basic financial security so it can focus on meeting the needs of its intended community. New clients should not fear closure or need to concern themselves with raising funds. A base of permanent paid staff, qualified in psychology and psychiatry would provide needed stability, leadership and an inclusive culture. In my opinion this is essential for it to be able to provide quality service to those in need. Client-led programs are admirable but can only go so far without those trained in developing and maintaining a community of people. And especially so when that community is comprised of vulnerable individuals. Leaders who have specialised and qualified in modern mental health service application, are essential to the foundation and framework of any client focussed/led organisation. Knowledge, Understanding, Order and Reliability of service are essential when the aim is to improve the lives of those living with a dis-ordered personality. Freedom to openly discuss their story in a safe space offering dignity and respect is essential for mental health. This freedom can't be achieved safely without trained staff or without clients having the opportunity to learn the skills for living within a group. It comes back to the need for reliable annual funding as a priority. Only then, can a safe, dynamic, dignified and intelligent service be provided. One that provides a truly SAFE HAVEN. I don't voice my opinion only to criticise, or to be negative with the aim to find fault. The Haven, with enough funding along with the current goodwill it already has in place, can become a truly reliable and safe haven.
