Both our sons are currently attending this school with a proud 300 year history of academic excellence with a Christian ethos and tradition; all religious persuasions are welcomed warmly and there is no compunction to indoctrinate, merely nurture to be upstanding citizens. One of our sons is in Year 13 and the other in Year 12; so we feel well qualified to offer a review. The curriculum offered is wide from core traditional subjects , to modern vocational based subjects at both GCSE and A Level to suit the academic diversity of a modern non- selective comprehensive school. The science, history and geography departments encourage students to undertake independent study and enquiry to achieve the highest grades. This will benefit students who are considering tertiary education to make the transition to higher education confidently. We were particularly pleased with the re-introduction of Latin and friends were thrilled that Design & Technology, Music and Drama were on offer. The Maths and English teaching is exceptional - always a mark of a very good school. One of my sons has dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. Notwithstanding this the schools SEN department has helped my son access the full curriculum to the extent that he enjoyed studying for all 12 GCSEs sat and passed well with excellent grades in Maths, four sciences and even English Language; these are the signs of outstanding pedagogy. Both our sons have thrived in the school and both have achieved very good results in their GCSEs and an EPQ in the case of my older boy. They are both on track to do very well in their A Levels too. We have the highest regard for the schools senior leadership team and the subject teachers. There is a good representation of students from all backgrounds and religious/ non- religious persuasion. This has helped our boys to have a rounded outlook on life. The debating society offers the opportunity to identify and discuss many topical issues and both boys have a good grasp of the many dilemmas facing us as a society. The sports department is committed to ensuring every student has the opportunity to experience a variety of sports and to partake in many extracurricular sporting activities. Both my sons have enjoyed playing a variety of team sports to a good standard and all the PE department staff offer mentorship well beyond the remit of sport. Education is a three way process. school, pupil and parents. So long as the pupil and parents are willing, the school offers everything required to produce well educated, confident, successful, rounded, happy young people. Mr Parrish is an erudite and wise Head. The loyalty of his senior leadership team and support staff is a testament to his and his teams calibre. When a selective school boasts good results, one cannot be sure whether this is as a result of good teaching or innate abilities of the students. However when a mixed ability intake school can boast both good results and can demonstrate many students have exceeded expectations of government predictions of achievement based on past grades, then we know we have a school with exceptional teachers. This is our experience of Archbishop Tenisons C of E High school ( Croydon)
