Really disappointed today. Im a cyclist with North Essex Velo and have visited here a few times previously. Ive always found the staff friendly, with good service and good food. Today I was leading a group of 8 cyclists there, so rang ahead at about 08.40 to see if they could accommodate us for about 10.45. This was agreed. We arrived at about 11am, made ourselves known and were asked if we wanted to sit inside or out - the place was empty. We sat outside using two separate tables of which there were several and in the whole time we were there, only 3 other people arrived and sat outside. Both the waitresses were brilliant - no complaints. Whilst taking our drinks orders, we were told there would be a 15% service charge as we were in a group of 6 or more. I questioned this as it hadnt been mentioned at the time of booking. The reply was it is shown on the menu. We ordered our food and I went to speak to the owner. I explained that I wasnt happy about the service charge and that this hadnt been mentioned when I booked. I asked could this be wavered as a gesture of good will. In short, there was no good will and I was met by an unwelcoming owner who stated it had been on the menu for 18 months and we could either leave, or pay the charge. He stated he had had to turn other groups away to accommodate our booking and move tables about to fit us in. There were literally plenty of spare tables inside and out, so I dont believe this at all. This could have been handled so much better by the owner, who then could have had repeat business from myself and colleagues. Needless to say I wont be going back and put this review here to make other groups aware ! As previously, the food was great, but left a poor taste in the mouth. Shame !
