I recently used HJ Tebbutt & Sons to carry out my bathroom refurbishment and the boarding of my loft, the works went smoothly and to time, the finish was exactly what I was looking for, I have already asked John to estimate for further works and I have also recommended them to several friends.

We had not such a good experience with this company. To be fair, the structure stands and hasnt fallen down and the cost to fix what they had done was in the 1,000s, not in the 10,000s. But we were not impressed by the process. Project management, options offered to us, response to complaints, care when fitting things, time taken vs. time promised, quoted costs vs. actual costs, actual usability of what they have built left something to be desired.

Do Not Hire We hired Tebbutt & Sons and they started work in April 2015 with a completion date of the 3rd week in July. At the end of Sept(with still at least a month to go) the building inspector visited and gave us a long list of serious issues. After having 2 independent surveyors around to look at the work we have a roof which might need to be completely replaced, wonky walls, a vertical pipe through the roof(which funnels rainwater into our hall) just stuffed with insulation and plastered under(now leaking). The entire ground floor ledgers & joists are bolted below the damp proof course directly onto the 'wet wall' and a few months after fitting we have a damp problem. 100mm insulation where building regs require 150mm, floor tiles cracked because the floor bounces so much, a shower which leaks in multiple places. The site was never tidied, builders urinating against our back door despite giving them a toilet. Its a very long list - the chartered surveyors letter ran to 69 separate issues. I had to pay 888 for this report from an independent RICS Surveyor as otherwise Dean Tebbutt refused to acknowledge any of our concerns. Being constantly blamed for every problem or the simplest question made communication impossible. Other interesting occurrences were coming home and finding my car boot with two large dents. Coming home and finding the entire ground floor wet after the water tank was emptied inside the house. I will lastly add that the pricing on one small addition(which I consider should have been included anyway) was in the surveyors words priced at a level which was 'extortionate and very concerning'. We were charged 15 man days and 3 lorries of waste to be removed for a job which was completed by 2 people in less than a day with half a lorry waste. I have had other builders come round to quote to repair the 'work' done and the only quote I've had was 40,000, no other companies will consider the job because of the mess left. Some other 'reviewers' seem happy with their work - I am happy to send the Surveyors report, Building Inspectors emails or provide contact details from other equally disgruntled customers if people wish.
