An unique object in an English village church? This lovely village church with fine views north from the churchyard contains a minor but intriguing mystery. Wooden grave-markers, set up in the battlefield pending a more permanent grave, are sometimes found as poignant memorials in churches and sometimes elsewhere (eg there is one on the east wall of Holywell Cemetery in Oxford). Of the many I've seen, the one in this church is unique: it is a German grave-marker for a British WWI Army officer. The circumstances of its erection are set out in a comprehensive account near the cross. It also notes the mystery and postulates a solution as to why Major Rickman was recorded as a Captain by the Germans.

Beautiful church. Lovely old yet loved feeling when inside. Walk around the back of the church to see stunning view of part of Oxfordshire.
