Largest and most striking of the 'gates' This one is located on the eastern side, south of East Gate. Traffic passes underneath but you can walk over the top and forms part of the city walls.

This imposing gate on the city walls is one of my favourite viewpoints. It is relatively new, built in 1938 to replace the medieval Peppergate (named after the spice merchants who once lived in this area). You have to negotiate some steep steps to access it, both from the busy street and from the wall, but it's worth the climb for a view that includes the Roman amphitheatre, the foundations of a Roman defensive tower and Chester's first cathedral. There's an info panel with a fascinating tale from this gateway's Tudor period. A lovely walk from here along the wall down to the river.
