We were recommended Abbeyfield from a friend whose mum was living at the Tewksbury house. It has been a life changer for mum and her family. The shared living is a bit like a luxury student home for the elderly! Home cooked meals, a freedom to come and go as they please, companionship, its like an extended family.

My aunt lived at Abbeyfield Prestbury for 12 years after finding out about the charity from, I think, a leaflet in her local church. It offered her exactly what she wanted - a way of continuing to live independently but without the bother of having to run her flat, with all its associated tasks, responsibilities and bills. She was especially keen on not having to think about cooking and shopping for food anymore. The balance of privacy in her comfortable room (she liked being able to bring her own furniture), while still eating and socialising with other residents at mealtimes - several of whom she grew to know very well over the years - was perfect for her. Although her mobility wasnt great latterly, she appreciated the range of activities and outings on offer. Her favourite was the annual strawberry tea for residents, staff and volunteers. She was particularly fond of several long-serving staff members and volunteers, and only moved away - with great reluctance - after a fall led to a lengthy hospital stay, and then the need for permanent nursing home care.
