I spent a weekend doing a wet plate photography course at Hulkes Lane darkroom in Rochester with the great teacher Rikard sterlund. Travelling all the way from Denmark, I was very excited and expectant. Although Ive been wanting to learn this old technique dating back to the 1850s for years, I realised that Ive actually never seen a plate photograph in real life. Shortly after seeing an Ambrotype for the first time, I was already holding a plate, pouring collodion and preparing for my first ever wet plate picture. Full of excitement, I made several pictures, some of them being better than others, nevertheless i learnt so much from every single picture I made. Thoughout the weekend I learnt about the beginning of photography, starting at the very first successful picture ever made. I learnt about old and contemporary photo-artists using this technique, and most importantly, doing wet plate collodion from soup to nuts. My goal of this workshop was to learn the process well enough to get started with my own projects, once I got back to Denmark. With great help and patience from the amazing teacher, Rikard, I can now confidently make ambrotypes and tintypes on my own. Wet plate collodion is a process that requires patience and calm nerves, which makes Rikard sterlund the perfect teacher - rare to find such a kind, gentle, calm and highly professional person. This weekend has exceeded all my expectations. Ive learned everything I came for - and more. Its been a pleasure to meet and learn from such a passionate and professional person as Rikard. I cant recommend Hulkes Lane darkroom enough! Im definitely coming back. Miles Lilley

I have just received my second print (of a pastel drawing) from Rikard and his friends at Hulkes Lane Studio in Rochester, and I would highly recommend this place to any artist needing top quality prints at low prices. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the print and the original, and the ink and paper used means they will last far longer than any normal print. There are plenty of other services there too, so have a good look at it all.

I have used Hulkes Lane Darkroom twice now for my photographic series, and I have been over the moon with their professionalism, friendliness, attention to detail, ability to listen and translate your brief to your exact requirements, I have been really impressed by the quality of work they produce, and trust them totally to produce high quality results for me. It's very refreshing and ensuring to work with experts in their field, who will will ensure you get the result you envisage and desire. As my project has certain limitations, this was specifically important to me. I can't praise them enough to be honest. When you create something it should be a joy not stressful, and it has certainly been a joy to work with Rikard and James. I look forward to a fruitful working relationship with them, going forward. I have every confidence and can totally relax when I leave my work in their hands. Fair pricing, great service, meticulous attention to detail, expedient. Awesome results!! Thanks guys!!!!!
