Gourmet Republikhas only been open a few months; yet, during that time, they've built up a following that compelled us to give them a visit. The place itself is aesthetically pleasing with impressive decor that includes a uniquely quirky lavatory. The restaurant shows great promise, having certainly nailed the poultry side of things, with superb chicken wings and a deliciously marinated grilled chicken, and some tremendous lamb chops. However, and in our considered opinion, while the burgers were decent, they need some refinement ifGourmet Republikis to seriously challenge the best gourmet Halal burgers currently out there. Burgers are great. Chips are nice. Prices are reasonable. The service is great, polite and attentive. However, the huge whole chicken is probably the driest brick hard poultry you'll ever have. Not moist and grilled for far too long, leaving it very tough. It also had the dreaded charcoal taste. It's not the same, drenched with sauce, succulent, juicy and tender, fall off the bone whole chicken I had a few years ago when this place first opened. The place has changed owners after being closed for over a year, and so the food has changed drastically. Drinks selection is very limited. Place is popular with students during lunchtimes as they have some deals on. However, at other times it is failing to attract customers. They need a top quality chef, someone who can cook the food properly. Seems as though the waiters are taking the order and then cooking it. That and a new grill/oven. Stocking up on supply and having things ready is also needed. Feel as though half the items are not available or not ready - which was the case for basics such as rice and the pizza. Everything on the menu has to be ready for order, not just the burgers. Maybe they'll improve. I hope they do as I tend to support local businesses. However, with Hoe Street restaurants only a short distance away, this place will fall down the pecking order.
