I am 68 years old. I live alone in a remote area of Combs. I am disabled. I have a blue disabled driving permit although I have been unable to drive for about 8 weeks due to a serious injury under my right foot. I can barely walk. I have not been able to get my hair cut during that time. My little dog should have gone to the vets for its annual check up 6 weeks ago. I cant get there. I have had to cancel my dental appointments for the same reason. I receive an old age pension and have no other income. I have to beg lifts off people to take me to the Cottage Hospital once or twice per week. I went this Thursday to have the wound re-dressed and to check that the infection had not returned. Luckily it hadnt. The doctor there suggested I should contact Thornbrook Road Medical Centre and ask them to send the District Nurse to my home a couple of times a week to change the dressing and check it was not infected again. So I phoned the Medical Centre later that day and explained the situation to the receptionist. She told me that if I could manage to get to Buxton I could get to Chapel and under no circumstances would I receive home visits. I explained that I was taken to Buxton by my aged cousin who also has a job to walk and her husband who is suffering with Parkinsons. It was by no means an easy journey. I was told that if they could get me to Buxton they should be able to get me to Chapel. Well they cant and I can not afford a taxi there and back twice a week. So in conclusion could you notify all hospitals that the District Nurse service is no longer available for people who have somehow managed to get themselves to a hospital appointment? I shall notify the Cottage of this later this week. In my opinion the whole thing is a total disgrace and I shall be taking the matter further. T. A. Beswick .
