Why is this organisation still condoning the surgical and mechanical growth stunting of children en masse? Extractions for "camouflage" orthodontics should not be practiced before the age of consent and cessation of growth. It's is a painful, risky and irreversible procedure. Expansion is beyond doubt the safer and more appropriate treatment for children and with modern techniques even most adults. Once retracted patients reach adulthood they may well decide that other treatment options would have offered better health and aesthetic outcomes but are now stuck with the results of a tragically misguided decision that was made for them before puberty.

An orthodontist ruined my face when I was 12 years old. 10 of their members closed ranks and denied the damage with full support of the BOS. The one person who helped me was ostracised by the BOS and struck off by the GDC. The time is coming when everyone will realise the dire health and cosmetic consequences of retractive orthodontics. It seems we are currently in stage 2 of Arthur Schopenhauer's famous adage: "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident." I welcome the day when we will see stage 3.
