Depressingly bad experience. I hired Mr Maclean to advise on using metal beams to support the removal of two internal walls in my ground-floor flat. It started badly: I confirmed the site meeting details the day before, coordinating all the owners of the two flats above and the one below to be in, and Maclean "forgot" about it. When he finally arrived, following my frantic phone calls, he spent around an hour talking pleasantly with everyone but without taking any measurements. Said the project would be no problem, expect the report in a week. It didn't arrive. I chased him, he rarely responded but when he or his staff did, they issued reassuring messages that he was "working on it, expect it in the morning". Finally I had a crucial meeting with Camden's Building Control department and so gave him a last deadline. He sent an excuse equivalent to "the dog ate my homework". The report never arrived, I stopped chasing him, and 7 weeks later all is silent. No apology, no explanation - a total waste of time. I could speculate as to the reasons for his ineptitude and I have a very plausible one which, but for the libel laws, I'd happily share with you all. Turns out he's not registered with the Institution of Structural Engineers so you can't complain to them either. Best advice - don't touch this guy with a barge pole - you will save yourself a load of exasperation. You're welcome.
