This is a great navigation planning & route following app that goes where your Tom Tom doesn't. Viewranger is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts such as mountain bikers, horseriders, walkers, off-roaders and anyone using the countryside off the beaten track. It has the advantage of storing maps on the device you are using meaning you are not dependant on a data signal - a rare luxury whilst up a mountain in Wales or even many parts of rural Britain. Once logged into the Viewranger website it is easy to plot routes on a desktop computer by simply clicking with your mouse to create way points on a map displayed. Once you have created your route simply open the app on your phone or tablet, press 'synch' and you can now set off and follow the route you planned as it is displayed on your screen along with your gps position overlayed and a direction indicator. The beauty of this app is it's possible to download Ordnance Survey maps which give detailed, zoomable digital reproductions showing footpaths, bridleways, byways etc as well as geographical information such as terrain. It's easy to use and packed with features - the app is free so rather than me explain it all here, download it and try it. The cust/tech support is inhouse and excellent. They are patient and will not rest until you are happy, unlike many tech supports these days where it is outsourced and you are told to turn it off and on again or left to fend for yourself on 'knowledgebases'. I have had email conversations well into the evening when correcting mistakes I had made and there is an actual telephone with real people that answer. Also worth noting is the online community (on the Viewranger website) that allow users to share routes with one another - search by area and activity type eg 'mountain bike route in Snowdonia' and up will pop a selection of routes people have planned and ridden together with ratings and descriptions. A great well thought out, well executed, home grown, locally developed app by a capable, approachable, helpful team. Highly recommend.
