For me however, RP Fitness takes the prize because it is independently run, and Richard the owner clearly has a passion for his gym. You will often see him walking around and he's always open to a chat or to hearing feedback from members. He and his team are generally highly responsive to what members want. On multiple occasions my wife and I have asked Richard or his team to change or add equipment (such as new collars or lightweight barbells) and they have done so without hesitation. RP Fitness is also open (although not staffed) 24/7, which the University Sports Centre is not.
However, although I think this is the best gym in Cambridge, I can't give it five stars for the main reason that I think the team have not responded to its increasing popularity. The gym is now very busy at peak times and if you are looking for power racks, flat benches, and platforms in particular you will often have to wait for them (if you have the flexibility to go during office hours or on weekends, there's never an issue). It is these pieces of equipment which are attracting a lot of the clientele in the first place (there's a friendly gang of regular powerlifters, for example) because other gyms lack them. While its great to have this equipment at all, there should be more of it since it is this gym's USP as far as the local area goes and generally the highest-demand equipment at any given time. There is evidently space for at least another rack, platform, and bench which is currently taken up by some low-demand, space-hungry equipment (e.g. there's both a leg press and a hack squat machine, which together seem rather excessive). Richard has said that he is hesitant to add more barbell equipment because he would rather that members share the equipment which is already there. This is a nice thought in principle, but in reality most people are going to wait rather than ask a powerlifter to strip 180kg off the barbell between sets so they can share the rack for squats.
Ultimately, you're not going to find better in Cambridge and so I have no qualms recommending this gym.
