The Gate Islington

I used to come here a lot pre-pandemic, but I think they really need to up their food game as its on the bland side. Note: pre-Sadlers Wells is not really a good idea because it gets too busy and staff are stressed. Come after 8pm.

To start, the food was great. Unfortunately, the service dropped my food on my lap - it was very hot and oily, leaving stains on my jumper and trousers. An accident though, so definitely forgivable. The part I cant forgive is that, now home and checking the receipt, it transpires the manager (he brought the contactless card machine over) put a discretionary 12.5% service charge on our bill, without asking or showing us the total amount due via the screen. This may be standard practice at the restaurant, but I resent being charged extra for the service when they ruined my clothes for the evening and made me wait for another dish.
