My amazing Mum was resident in The Red House for about 6 months till she succumbed to the horror that is Alzheimer's recently. Our fab Social Worker, Jenny in my mum's home county of MK found her the place, as there was nowhere available in the MK area and she had already been in MK TOPAS for 8 months before moving to The Red House over the border in Bucks. We are so grateful she was here, the staff were wonderful. From the office staff to the catering staff, nurse manager to cleaners, carers to the caretaker, everyone we dealt with or just met when visiting, was so lovely and friendly. Carol the manager proactively arranged a CHC assessment for Mum (even though we knew she wouldn't get it, as the 'system' deems Dementia not a terminal illness well, it killed her 4 months later!), which involves really lengthy meeting and a lot of paperwork but she still did it and I know lots of places don't bother and families really have to fight to get staff to do it. Any time any of us visited, the staff were so kind to us and mum, and they kept in touch all the time with us to update us on her. The place itself is a beautiful old redbrick in a pretty village full of thatched cottages, just a 3 minute drive into Buckingham. There's a little garden area so you can sit outside with your Loved One, if they're able. They have a lady who comes with animals once a week , which is so lovely; my mum was a huge animal lover and even when she couldn't get down to the common area anymore, they took the pets up to her bed so she could still stroke them! Carol sends WhatsApp videos of residents with the pets, or singing, dancing, doing craft or just 'nice" things she thinks family would enjoy. This meant such a lot! They have a hairdresser and chiropodist who come in too. Some of the staff have been there years, such as the lovely Sarah-Jane, which I think speaks volumes of a home as Care staff can literally go anywhere, they're so needed by homes all over! One of the most telling experiences of how lovely these people are though, was when my mum was on EOL. The way the 'system' allows us to die is so wrong but the staff were wonderful. It took my lovely mum 3 days once she was not responsive and unable to even swallow water and my sister, stepdad and I were at her bedside for nearly all that time. The staff, such as the aptly named Comfort, and the overnight carer Asiah (hope I've spelt that right) were popping in throughout that time though ppto check on us and ensure we were ok, bring us drinks etc., and just generally chat about mum to us. We were able to stay as long as we liked and we never felt forgotten about. Those 3 days were horrific in many ways but we are so grateful to have been able to have them and to have had the kind support of the staff during those harrowing hours when we essentially camped at my mum's bed side and remembered her and were as positive as we could be for her as she left us. Honestly, if your LO gets a place here you can be very relieved they have excellent care. (Photo of the rainbow that appeared after my mum passed!)
