Set in an ancient enclosure on the site of a far earlier church, St Mary the Virgin in Broxted dates from the 13th century. The flint and rubble construction is dressed with brick, and roman brick, particularly in the east wall some of the chancel. The current structure was rebuilt in the Victorian era but retains 16th century roof timbers and an interior designed in the 17th century with the pulpit specifically in the English renaissance style. The church is home to a pair of rather special windows. Produced in 1991 to commemorate the release of the Beirut Hostages, they are referred to as Captivity and Release. John McCarthy was held captive along with Terry Waite and Brian Keeler in the Lebanon during the 1980s. McCarthy worked with the artist in designing the windows, which are both rich with symbolism.
