Oh dear! I've come to write a review - then you see other reviews and how others are feeling the same as you! I also notice that hardly any (if indeed any) reviews have been answered by the owners - clearly, they are not interested or even aware of such reviews. This place is such a waste in the hands of owners/managers who are so obviously disinterested. When visiting a fine venue & restaurant, what is more important to you I ask......great food? or a great culture? Great food is generally fairly straight forward to provide. If you pay enough, suppliers will provide you quality food. Generally speaking, a Chef will have the capacity to produce a tasty meal from fine ingredients - otherwise he wouldn't be a chef right? So what's more important then? Yes, a great culture! A great culture comes from the top - it comes with hiring the right staff. Staff that are knowledgable, fun, friendly - staff that care, have passion and are interested in what they do. All this provides a great atmosphere and a great experience for the customer which is everything you are looking for when going out for a meal. There's absolutely no point at all having great food if the culture is wrong and - if the culture is right, the great food will follow every time (guaranteed!). Unfortunately, this great culture, great atmosphere and great experience is not what you will find at The Oaksmere! It has got to be the most disappointing experience ever. The venue is awesome, the setting, grounds and layout is fabulous. The building, it's history and environment is so interesting and the food is no doubt good quality - it even has the big bertha charcoal oven - all sounds great doesn't it? It doesn't however have a great culture! The staff are rude, they gave us no time to decide, they offered no help, there was no wine list provided until we asked (and were made to feel stupid in asking), there's no drinks menu at all, the bar staff don't know their drinks (they don't do cocktails either - untrained apparently which we discovered is true even with the basics!). The bar staff didn't know the difference between scotch whisky and bourbon! The food menu's were taken away from us before we had hardly had time to look at them. And then the prices! Extortionate - which, if there had been a great culture, we would have been happy to pay - even the 10% service charge (which appears on your bill with no mention of the fact that it is discretionary) - we would have been happy to pay this had the service been right but there was no way I was paying for this with the service we received. In short, we will not be returning - there's simply no point. Very expensive, bad service, hopeless atmosphere. I have given a 1 star because in my view, there is no middle ground - you're either a 5 star or a 1 star! Do the job right or it's wrong! Hopefully there will be a management change at some point and this beautiful venue is rescued and reinvigorated - until then - Adios Amigo!
